It’s known as the Fastest Two Minutes in Sports, and one of the most exciting days of the sports calendar. The 2019 Kentucky Derby is just around the corner, but you can get started betting long before the gates open at Churchill Downs. With this guide and the above video, we’ll be helping you figure out where to bet, how to bet, and what to bet on for the Kentucky Derby.

Let’s begin with what you can bet on when it comes to the Kentucky Derby and horse racing in general. The simplest bets you can make are straight bets called Win, Place, and Show. For each of these, you’ll be selecting one horse to bet on. If you bet on that horse to Win, then a first-place finish by that horse earns you a payout. Place and Show bets work the same way, except for Place you only need the horse to finish in first or second, while Show also allows for a third-place finish to pay. The payouts get smaller as you move from Win to Place to Show, and you don’t get a bigger payout or bonus for a first-place finish if you bet on a winning horse to Place or Show.

If you want to place a bet on a horse in advance of the Derby itself, you can place a Futures bet. These bets will give you better payout odds, but they lock you in on your horse no matter what may happen between when you place your wager and race day. If the horse you bet on in April is injured or pulled from the race prior to the start, you simply lose your bet. Futures bets are also paid out in more traditional fashion, where you place your bet and lock-in your payout odds. On other horse racing wagers, a pari-mutuel wagering system is typically used, where the final payout odds on each horse aren’t locked in until all bets are made. This means that your expected payout for a successful bet could shift in the time between when you make your wager and when the race begins.

When betting on horse racing online, there are a few things to consider. You’ll want to use a site that’s versatile so that, for example, you aren’t using one site for horse racing, another for basketball, and a third for football. You also want to make sure that the website or app works for your mobile devices. Betting online adds the convenience of being able to do it anywhere, and you want to make sure that the website you choose is available to you even when you’re away from your primary computer.

Financially, you want a site that gives you fair withdrawal and deposit guidelines, bonuses, and a variety of funding options for making deposits. Last but not least is customer service. Nothing is more frustrating than when problems arise, or you have an issue accessing or using something. This is why you want to make sure that your site of choice has the customer service to help clear up any issues you may or may not experience.

The Kentucky Derby is the highest profile horse race of the year in the United States. This years Derby was postponed from it’s normal time slot on the first Saturday in May, to this coming Saturday, September 5th. This postponement has bumped the Derby to the second leg of the 2020 Triple Crown because the Belmont Stakes ran as scheduled on June 20th.

Even with the changes I’m expecting the Derby to take center stage in the United States this Saturday, with the Kentucky Derby being broadcast on national television (NBC) for 5 hours on race day (starting at 2:30pm EST). This national interest definitely plays a part in the Kentucky Derby being the second most bet on sporting event in a typical year in the USA, next to only the Super Bowl.
